Pathfinder
Pathfinders can only be built by players who have selected the Discoverer player class. However, any class can obtain Pathfinders by finding them on expeditions.
The Pathfinder is a versatile exploration ship that increases the haul from expeditions. Each Pathfinder in an expedition fleet adds bonus resources to expedition finds. It also has decent cargo capacity and speed for a utility ship.

Expedition Bonus
The number of Pathfinders in an expedition fleet increases the amount of resources and ships found. This stacks with the Discoverer class's own expedition bonuses:

All three stack, making a Discoverer in a Researcher alliance with maxed Pathfinder fleets the highest expedition yield possible.
Expedition slots are set by Astrophysics level (+2 from Discoverer class).
Tips
Send a few Pathfinders with every expedition mission. Their crystal and deuterium cost is quickly recouped through improved expedition yields.
With 10,000 cargo capacity and reasonable combat stats, the Pathfinder can also serve as a cargo escort in early game.
Higher speed than most cargo ships with good capacity — usable as a quick transport between planets.
