Dark Matter
Dark Matter is OGame's premium resource. Unlike Metal, Crystal, and Deuterium it cannot be mined — it is found on expeditions or purchased with real money. It is used to activate Officers, switch player classes, and buy items from the in-game shop.
How to Obtain
Expeditions
Sending fleets on expedition missions has a chance of returning Dark Matter. The amount found scales with fleet size and the number of Pathfinders in the expedition.
Expeditions are the only way to accumulate Dark Matter without spending real money. A Discoverer with the Researcher alliance class maximises expedition returns and therefore Dark Matter income.
Purchase
Dark Matter can be bought directly through the OGame shop for real currency.
What Dark Matter Is Used For
Officers
Officers are permanent account-wide buffs activated with Dark Matter. Each officer costs Dark Matter to activate for a set period (typically 30 days or permanent).
| Officer | Bonus |
|---|---|
| Commander | +1 fleet slot · enables commander features (overview, galaxy toolbar) |
| Admiral | +1 fleet slot |
| Engineer | +10% energy from all sources · −10% fleet fuel consumption |
| Geologist | +10% mine production on all planets · +10% energy production |
| Technocrat | Espionage Technology effectively +2 · −25% research time |
Almost every player activates Commander permanently. The extra fleet slot and interface improvements are indispensable.
All five officers active simultaneously is the gold standard for competitive accounts. The combined production and research bonuses compound significantly over time.
Player Class Change
Switching your player class costs Dark Matter. There is no cooldown — you can switch freely as long as you have the Dark Matter to spend.
Shop Items
Dark Matter can be spent in the shop on:
- Construction speed-ups (finish buildings/research instantly)
- Resource packages
- Inventory items (temporary production boosts, fleet speed bonuses)
- Additional storage capacity
- Dark Energy Transmitter (converts DM to resources)
Dark Matter Economy
Officers provide permanent, compounding benefits. Prioritise activating all five over spending on one-time shop items.
A dedicated Discoverer with maximum expedition slots running expeditions continuously generates a steady DM income that can sustain officer activation without spending real money — though it takes time.
Build speedups are tempting but have low long-term value compared to permanent officer bonuses. Only spend on speedups once all officers are covered.
